WHY INCLUSION MATTERS
Lasting, transformative social change is only possible through inclusion. Social inclusion ensures all members of society have a voice and the power to determine their own destiny. This is a matter of social justice. Access to resources and participation in the political, social, and economic dimensions of sustainable development matters in a world of growing inequality. The TAAP Toolkit and Guide for Inclusive Development gives practitioners the framework, resources, and guidance to ensure social inclusion in new and existing projects.
Inclusive development describes the obligation of all development actors to respect, protect, and pursue the fulfillment of basic human rights. Achieving the inclusive world envisioned in the United Nation’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development requires radically changing the agency, access, and power of those people and groups who control resources and power, and those who are marginalized or excluded entirely.
THE APPROACH
The TAAP Approach is an analytical framework, a set of five guiding principles, and a series of practical steps for integrating universal and transformative strategies and practices throughout a project cycle. Whether you are seeking to integrate inclusion into an existing project of any sector (e.g., agriculture, health, education) or to design a new project with inclusion as its own goal, the TAAP Toolkit and Guide for Inclusive Development is a valuable resource.
Years before the first word of the TAAP Toolkit and Guide for Inclusive Development was written, the TAAP Approach was being developed and refined through a range of collaborations and pilot programs all over the world. Starting with a series of DC-based consultations and a launch of the core concepts in 2015, the TAAP team conducted a series of “ground-truthing” consultations and workshops.
THE TAAP TOOLKIT AND GUIDE FOR INCLUSIVE DEVELOPMENT
A toolkit designed for practitioners, organizations, and policymakers to ensure the integration of inclusive development in existing projects of any sector or to design a new project with inclusion as its goal.
PARTNERSHIPS
World Learning works in close collaboration with a group of dedicated international development organizations, including: World Learning Europe, IREX, Leonard Cheshire Disability, Mobility International USA (MIUSA), Women’s Refuge Commission, and Help Age International, among others.
THOUGHT LEADERSHIP
Through the thought leadership of World Learning and our partners, the TAAP Initiative is a trusted source of expertise in gender and social inclusion. Through innovative approaches to inclusive development and extensive consultations with diverse voices, we turn international values, including commitments to sustainable development and universal human rights, and translate them into actionable steps. We engage practitioners early in the evolution of our “big ideas” to ensure that our work will have the broadest, most effective impact on inclusive development.
LEARNING AGENDA
World Learning and our TAAP partners have developed a growing global community of practitioners who share practices and exchange lessons learned in the international development landscape to ensure full inclusion. Since 2015, we have gathered stakeholders to identify challenges, curate research in the gender and social inclusion field, and formulate and prioritize questions. The TAAP Toolkit and Guide for Inclusive Development further leverages our network to test components of the toolkit, improve practices, make evidence-based decisions collaboratively, and support organizational and programmatic change.
